Sit them in a firm dining chair, in normal clothes, feet flat. Fill in whichever measurements you have — each one narrows the list, and you do not need all three.
Seat height is usually what decides petite versus standard — not seat width. Our chairs run from 41cm to 56cm off the floor. If the seat is higher than the back of the knee the feet dangle, which makes standing harder and less safe; too low and getting up is a struggle even with a power lift. Seat depth matters next: a seat deeper than the thigh presses behind the knee. Not sure? Ring Kellie on 022 022 9956 with the three numbers and she will tell you which chairs are worth looking at.

Lift chair buying questions, answered
How do I know if she needs a petite chair or a standard one?
Measure from the back of the knee to the floor with shoes on, and match that to the chair's seat height — ours run from 41cm to 56cm. That single number decides it far more reliably than height or dress size. If the seat is too high the feet dangle and standing becomes unsafe; too low and getting up is hard even with a power lift. Then check seat depth against bottom-to-back-of-knee: a seat deeper than the thigh presses behind the knee and cuts circulation. Seat width matters least of the three. Put the numbers into the box at the top of this page and it will show only the chairs that fit.
What does a "dual motor" or "infinite position" lift chair mean?
A single-motor chair moves the backrest and leg rest together. A dual (twin) motor chair drives them independently, so you can put your legs up while sitting upright — often called "infinite position", because the back and legs set to any angle, including near lay-flat. Quad-motor chairs add a powered headrest and lumbar. Our manual La-Z-Boy recliners (no motor) are also listed so you can compare them.
Which lift chair holds the most weight?
The Pride LC-358XL Bariatric is our strongest at 227kg, with a 66cm seat. The Heavy-Duty Electric Lift Chair holds 220kg and has the widest seat at up to 67.5cm. The iCare VMotion is rated to 170kg, and most standard chairs hold 130–150kg.
Fabric, vinyl, bonded leather or leather — which should I choose?
This is a cleaning decision more than a looks one. Vinyl and PU wipe clean and are the safe answer where continence, spills or shared use are in the picture. Bonded leather is leather fibre bonded onto a backing — it looks and wipes like leather at a fraction of the price, though it can craze after years of heavy daily use. Genuine hide is the most durable and the only one that ages well; the Pride T-3 is the one chair here that has it. Fabric is warmer and kinder to sit on for long stretches, but it absorbs. A swatch name like "leather look" describes the finish, not the material — use the upholstery filter above to see what each chair is actually made of, and ring us if a chair shows no material yet.
What is a zero-gravity lift chair?
A zero-gravity chair reclines so your legs rise toward heart level, taking pressure off the spine and helping circulation — the position astronauts use at launch. It's ideal for swelling, back comfort and long periods of rest. For a chair that lifts the legs fully above the heart (true Trendelenburg), see the Pride T-3.
How much room does a lift chair need?
Allow roughly the chair's overall width (76–100cm here) plus clearance behind for the backrest to recline — most "wall-hugger" style chairs need only 15–30cm behind. Measure your space before ordering; call us on 022 022 9956 if you're unsure.
What are the "clinical & prescription" chairs?
Four chairs are built to a measured specification rather than bought off the shelf: the iCare VMotion, the iCare VFit Clinical Seating System, the Cubro Configura Comfort and the Theorem Aroki. They suit pressure care, tilt-in-space positioning and complex or changing needs, and they are the chairs an occupational therapist is most likely to specify. Being made to your spec, change-of-mind returns don't apply — so talk to us, or to your OT, before ordering.
Prices in NZD, shown live from our store. Measured in-house by Mobility Plus — if a figure looks off, call us on 022 022 9956.
Is a La-Z-Boy recliner or rocker motorised — does it lift you out of the seat?
No. The La-Z-Boy Pinnacle rocker and mobile recliners are manual — you recline and rock with a handle on the outside arm, but they are not powered and do not lift or tilt you up towards standing the way a power lift chair does. They’re still a great option for many people: they come in easy-clean antimicrobial Vinyl (PU) upholstery that simply wipes down, and the mobile model rolls on a braked wheeled base so a user can be moved easily between rooms. If you need help getting up to standing, choose one of the powered lift chairs above.
