Adjustable Crutches

Crutches take the weight off an injured leg or foot while it heals, or give lasting support if one leg can't carry a full load. We stock double-adjustable elbow crutches, comfy-handle and gutter (arthritic) models, traditional underarm crutches and replacement tips — as a pair, or as a single crutch if that's all you need.

Elbow, underarm or gutter crutches?

  • Elbow (forearm) crutches — a cuff around the forearm plus a handgrip. Lighter, kinder to the armpits and better for longer-term use. This is what most NZ physios issue.
  • Underarm (axilla) crutches — the classic pair that tuck under the arms. Easier to learn and steadier on day one, so they suit short-term recovery from a sprain, fracture or foot surgery.
  • Gutter (arthritic) crutches — the forearm rests in a padded trough, so weight travels through the elbow rather than the wrist and hand. The right choice with arthritis, a wrist injury or a weak grip.

Do I need one crutch or two?

Two, for anything non-weight-bearing or partially weight-bearing — your physio or surgeon will have told you which. One crutch is for the later stage of recovery or ongoing balance support, and it's held on the opposite side to the sore leg. We sell single elbow crutches from $34.95, so you don't have to buy a pair you won't use.

What height should crutches be set to?

Standing upright in your normal shoes with your arm hanging straight down, the handgrip should sit level with the crease of your wrist — that gives a comfortable 15–30° bend at the elbow when you lean on it. With underarm crutches, leave two to three finger-widths between the top pad and your armpit: the pad steadies the crutch against your ribs, it is not something to rest your weight on. Every crutch we sell is height-adjustable, so you can fine-tune once it arrives.

Replacement tips

Crutch tips wear smooth and a worn tip is a genuine fall risk. Ours are heavy-duty with a metal insert and come in several sizes — measure the outside diameter of your crutch leg before you order.

Funding

Crutches are commonly funded through ACC, Enable, Accessable and WINZ. We can supply a compliant quote for your OT — get in touch and we'll turn it around same day.
