Choosing between the three

XP Support

The entry level. Firmer support with reinforced edges. Best where the main need is stability, comfort and mild pressure relief, and where skin is not currently at risk.

ActiveX

The middle tier, and the one most often prescribed. ActiveX material responds to heat and pressure, softening around high-pressure or inflamed areas for targeted relief exactly where it is needed.

ActiveFloat

The highest specification. Deeper immersion for when skin integrity is the primary concern and the person spends long periods in bed.

When an overlay is not enough

If pressure injuries have already occurred, or an OT has assessed high risk, a full pressure care mattress such as the IC30 will usually be the right answer instead. We would rather tell you that than sell you an overlay that does not do the job.

What is the difference between an overlay and a pressure care mattress?

An overlay is a layer that sits on top of your existing mattress. A pressure care mattress replaces it entirely. An overlay is cheaper and less disruptive; a full mattress gives more consistent pressure redistribution and is the right choice at higher risk levels.

Which one should I choose?

XP Support for stability and mild relief. ActiveX for targeted pressure relief — the most commonly prescribed. ActiveFloat where skin integrity is the main concern. If an occupational therapist is involved, follow their recommendation.

Will it work on an adjustable bed?

Yes — the overlays suit standard, adjustable and profiling beds.

Will it change the height of the bed?

Yes, and it is worth thinking about. An overlay raises the sleeping surface, so check that any side rails still sit high enough above the mattress to be effective, and that the transfer height still suits the user.

What size do I need?

Match it to your existing mattress, not the bed frame. Measure the mattress and check against the size list, or send us the measurements and we will confirm.

Can I get funding for an overlay?

Possibly. It is arranged through an occupational therapist, who submits the request to Enable New Zealand or Accessable, or to ACC if the need arises from an injury. We are a registered vendor with Enable, ACC and MSD/Work and Income.
