Why split, and why telescopic

Split sections

A single full-length rail has to come all the way down every time someone gets in or out. A split rail lets you drop only the section you need, so the rest of the bed stays protected during a transfer.

Telescopic adjustment

Each section extends, so you can set how much of the bed length is covered. Useful when someone needs protection at the head end but clear access at the foot, or where the rail has to work around a hoist or a chair.

Something to hold

Rails are not only a barrier. Many people use them to pull against when rolling or sitting up, which supports independence rather than restricting it.

A word of caution

Side rails carry real risk as well as benefit. Gaps between the rail and mattress can cause entrapment, and someone determined to get out may climb over a rail and fall from a greater height than they would have from the mattress. Where a person is confused or agitated, lowering the bed is often safer than adding rails. We would rather say that than sell you a pair that makes things worse.

Which beds do these fit?

The Cubro Casero bed range. Cubro have confirmed to us that the 3828 quad telescopic split rails suit the Casero Duo in both Single and Super Single. They will not fit the Cubro Caro, which uses its own foldable steel rails, and they will not fit iCare beds.

Is this one rail or two?

A pair — one for each side of the bed.

What does split mean?

The rail is in two independently operated sections rather than one continuous barrier, so you can lower just the part you need for a transfer while the rest stays up.

Does my mattress affect the rails?

Yes, and it is the thing most people overlook. The rail height that matters is the height above the sleeping surface, not above the platform. A 225mm mattress leaves considerably less effective rail than a 150mm one. If you are ordering a mattress at the same time, tell us and we will check the combination.

Are side rails always a good idea?

No, and it is worth being honest about that. They prevent rolling out, but they also create entrapment risk if the gaps are wrong, and someone who climbs over a rail falls further than they would have from the mattress alone. For a confused or agitated person, lowering the bed is often the safer approach. An occupational therapist should assess this rather than it being a purchase decision.

Can I get funding for rails?

Often, yes, where an occupational therapist has assessed the need as part of a bed prescription. We are a registered vendor with Enable New Zealand, ACC and MSD/Work and Income.
